Home-Start supports almost 73,000 vulnerable children across the UK. Last year, our 16,000 volunteers gave a million hours of support to their families. We help them cope with post-natal illness, isolation, bereavement, disability, domestic violence and much more. Support our charity by running in the 2011 Royal Parks half marathon.

EACH supports families and cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. We provide care and support wherever the family wishes – in families’ own homes, in hospital or at one of our hospices in Ipswich, Milton and Quidenham.

In may 2007 my eldest child (31 yrs) and only son, Cpl Darren Bonner was killed in a land mine explosion in Southern Afghanistan. My whole world fell apart and my life was changed forever. How was I ever to carry on bearing this terrible pain. In any case, I had to keep it together for their sakes of my 3 daughters who had also lost their big brother.

“Bogus callers”, “doorstep crime” or “distraction burglary” is a crime that a lot of people fear. Follow our advice so that you can spot the signs of whether or not an unexpected caller to your home is genuine.

Crime prevention advice

Check the identity of the caller by calling the company they say they are from. Don’t use the number they give you to call as this may be a bogus number
If your service provider has a password scheme, sign up to these. When unannounced callers turn up without the password don’t open the door
Don’t keep large quantities of cash on the premises
Keep doors and windows secure at all times
If you let someone in close the door behind you
If you have a door chain use it
Make sure that your back door is locked if you go to answer your front door-thieves can work in pairs and distract you
If you think that your being targeted by a distraction technique contact the police either on 101 or 999
